Consumer spend suffers after “quadruple whammy” to economy

Average UK household spend has dropped at its fastest rate in four years, as inflation and a “quadruple whammy” of bad news hit the economy. According to the latest data from Visa’s consumer spending index, spending fell by 0.3 per cent between April and June year-on-year marking the steepest decline since 2013. Lidl to open 60 stores a year in £1.45bn UK push

German discount grocer has Lidl announced plans to open “at least one shop a week” amid £1.45 billion expansion push. Speaking to the Telegraph the retailer’s UK chief executive Christian Härtnagel said that he plans to open a further 60 stores per year in the UK, hoping to fill the gaps where shoppers didn’t have close access to a Lidl store. Doubling its 30 store openings from last year, Lidl has reportedly already agreed on locations for between 50 and 60 stores to open over the next two years.

Sainsbury’s own fairtrade label “sets a concerning precedent” say MPs

MP’s have piled pressure onto Sainsbury’s to continue to back the 25-year-old Fairtrade campaign, after the grocer’s own “Fairly Traded” initiative threatens its future. 40 MPs across both parties, alongside shareholders and an 85,000-signature petition have urged the UK’s second largest grocer to stick with Fairtrade. Sainsbury’s new Fairly Traded scheme on its tea has been accused of undermining Fairtrade, and there are fears that the ethical label will extend to bananas and coffee in the future.
