Card payments expected to overtake cash for first time in 2018

Card payments are expected to overtake cash payments in the UK for the first time this year, as shoppers begin to favour digital for increasingly smaller purchases. According to new data gathered by the Guardian from UK Finance, 2016 saw the lowest number of withdrawals from cash machines since 2010, with the total volume dropping £6 billion from 2015.

400 more jobs axed at Palmer & Harvey

Hundreds more jobs have been cut at the collapsed grocery supplier Palmer & Harvey as it fails to secure a deal to sell off a chunk of the business. Four hundred people lost their jobs two weeks ahead of Christmas, bringing the total number of redundancies to nearly 3000. Roughly 450 employees remain at the wholesale grocery business.

Tesco Booker deal gets provisional green light from CMA

The landmark merger between Tesco and the UK’s largest wholesaler has been given the provisional go ahead from the Competition Markets Authority (CMA). Back in May the CMA officially launched its probe into the proposed deal, amid criticism from across the grocery sector.

Bargain Booze owner raises toast to first half 9.2% revenue surge

Revenues have surged by almost a tenth at Bargain Booze parent company Conviviality, fuelled by rising sales across all of its business units. In a trading update for the 26 weeks ending October 29, Conviviality revealed unaudited total revenues went up 9.2 per cent to £836 million, compared to the £766 million recorded in the same period last year
